This item assesses relative standing within a distribution. Percentile ranks express that by showing the percentage of people whose scores are at or below a given score. So, a score in the 60th percentile means you scored higher than 60% of the reference group, clearly placing you in a relative position within the distribution.

Other score types describe related ideas but in different ways. Standard scores (or z-scores) show how far a score is from the mean in units of standard deviation, which helps compare across tests but doesn’t directly translate to a percentile of the distribution. Raw scores are simply the absolute totals, offering no information about how you compare to others.
